Greens Deputy Leader Adam Bandt MP has given notice of a bill to establish a National Integrity Commissioner.

Mr Bandt hopes discussion in the House of Representatives on the National Integrity Commissioner Bill could start as early as next week.

"Anti-corruption bodies exist in most of the states but there is nothing at a Federal level, so action on an Integrity Commissioner is long overdue," Mr Bandt said.

"Unfortunately this is not the first time allegations have been made about Parliamentarians or public servants and unfortunately it won't be the last. That is why we need a National Integrity Commissioner."

"This could be the silver lining out of the current on-going saga: a long lasting reform of our laws to deal with corruption and integrity."

"We first flagged this bill in the Senate in 2010, so the old parties have had an opportunity to back the idea. We hope recent events focus their minds."

The National Integrity Commissioner Bill 2010 would establish a national anti-corruption body charged with overseeing public officials and Commonwealth agencies. Its powers and functions would be based on the existing Law Enforcement Integrity Commissioner which currently covers the Australian Federal Police, Crime Commission and Customs.

It would also establish an Independent Parliamentary Advisor to provide written advice to Ministers and parliamentarians on standards, codes of conduct, entitlements, potential conflicts of interest, ethical issues and matters of propriety.
